Picture the moment the box opens: a white flash, a scatter of rainbow fire, and a diamond that is every bit as real as the promise behind it. Lab-grown diamond engagement rings have gone from a niche choice to one of the most popular ways to propose. They offer real diamonds, a traceable origin and a far more approachable price. This guide walks you through every decision, in the order you will make them, so you can buy with total confidence.

In brief

  • A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, with the same hardness, brilliance and fire as a mined stone.
  • Set your budget first; a common approach is to spend around half to two-thirds on the center stone.
  • Never compromise on cut. G or H color and VS1 or VS2 clarity usually look icy white and eye-clean.
  • Insist on an independent grading report confirming the diamond's laboratory-grown origin.
  • Buy from a jeweler with clear pricing, insured shipping, fair returns and real people to talk to.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond: pure carbon in a diamond crystal structure, with the same hardness, brilliance and fire as a mined stone. It sits at 10 on the Mohs scale, just like any diamond, which makes it ideal for a ring you will wear every day.

It is grown above ground using one of two methods. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) recreates the intense conditions deep inside the earth, while CVD (chemical vapor deposition) builds the crystal layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas. Either way, the rough crystal is then cut and polished by hand exactly like a mined diamond.

Lab-grown diamonds are created above ground in controlled laboratory conditions, using either the HPHT or CVD method.

In the United States, the FTC's Jewelry Guides recognize lab-grown diamonds as diamonds, provided their origin is clearly disclosed. For a full side-by-side comparison, read lab-grown vs mined diamonds.

The origin is different. The diamond is not.

How to choose a lab-grown diamond engagement ring, step by step

Step 1: Set your budget

Because lab-grown diamonds cost far less than mined diamonds of the same size and quality, your budget stretches further. Decide on a total you are comfortable with first, then split it between the diamond and the setting. A common approach is to spend around half to two-thirds on the center stone. We break down real numbers in how much a lab-grown diamond ring costs.

It is also worth knowing how you will pay. At LUXEIGA you can reserve your ring with 30%, pay 30% on design approval and the final 40% on completion, for the same price as paying in full. Klarna is also available in the UK.

Step 2: Choose the shape

Shape sets the personality of the ring. Round brilliants deliver the most sparkle. Ovals and pears look larger for their weight and flatter the finger. Emerald cuts offer an elegant, mirror-like glow. See every shape compared in our engagement ring shapes guide.

Step 3: Choose carat and grade

The 4Cs (cut, color, clarity and carat) describe every diamond. Our advice is simple, and it is summarized below.

The C What to choose Why
Cut Excellent Never compromise: cut drives sparkle. Every LUXEIGA center diamond is Excellent cut.
Color G or H Looks icy white once set, especially in white gold or platinum, and offers great value.
Clarity VS1 or VS2 Aim for "eye-clean." These grades usually look flawless to the naked eye.
Carat Often 1.5 to 2 carats Many couples choose this size for the same budget a 1 carat mined diamond would need.

Step 4: Choose the setting and metal

The setting holds your diamond and shapes how it looks on the hand. Popular styles include the classic solitaire, the halo (a ring of small diamonds that makes the center look larger), pavé bands, and three-stone or toi et moi designs.

For metal, 14K gold is durable and popular in the US, 18K gold has a richer color, and platinum is naturally white and very hard-wearing. Consider the color of your diamond too: a G or H stone looks its whitest in white gold or platinum, while yellow and rose gold bring warmth to the whole ring.

The setting is where a diamond becomes a ring. Every LUXEIGA ring is handcrafted to order at the jeweler's bench.

Step 5: Check the certificate

Every lab-grown center diamond should come with an independent grading report confirming its cut, color, clarity, carat and laboratory-grown origin. IGI and GIA are both independent laboratories, and every LUXEIGA center diamond is graded by one of them, with the certificate included. Here is how to read one: IGI vs GIA lab diamond certificates.
